![]() You cannot put it back in the hole in the door metal unless you take it apart as the two parts and put the base in before the cover. ![]() At first I levered out the whole port hole cover but found I should have done it as a two step process. ![]() Make sure you pull out the inner oval like section on this port hole as it comes out and then if you want to you can pull out the outer part of the port hole. I sprayed al parts with WD40 and removdd the little opening cover next to the lock on the normally concealed door edge to access into the lock area. Then I used my finger to operate the door lock clasp instead of closing the door again, and opened and closed the mechnism with both door handles many times to ensure it was working. You can manipulate the inside and outside door handles while doing this trying to open the door.įinally it opened, no damage! I did scratch the window tint a liitle bit because i used a hacksaw blade but no big deal. After a while of doing this and feeling around with the tool. I used a hacksaw blade as a thin stiff insert between the window wound down and fully open and the inside rubber seal to get down to the locking mechanism at the rear of the outside door handle - thst is where you aim for, and then move the tool around feeling for a lever you can push down that is a mechanism that is springy and you can move. BUT then I found this and it worked for me. I read about making a hole in the door lining to break up the actuator and the risks with the air bag (DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST AND LET THE CIRCUIT DISCHARGE FOR 15 MINUTES BEFORE MAUCKING ABOUT WITH THE EXPLOSIVE AIRBAG!!!), but was reluctant to do this but it seemed the way to go. I tried thumping against the inside and outside of the door to unjamb it. I tried multiple door handle operations inside and outside. I tried spraying WD40 or aerosol liquid lubrication into accesible areas. The lock indicator went up and down electrically/electronically via the actuator but the door would not open. the passenger door seixed and could not be opened by internal or external handle. I'll post a link to the video when I get it uploaded.I had this problem with our 528i E39 1996. I THINK they were $10.00 for the outer cover and $20.00 for the pull strap. Reinstall is the reverse of the removal procedure. I had planned to cut the end of the studs off just for clearance but it was not necessary.ĩ. This setup was just as solid feeling as the melted plastic studs. I shoved the "washers" over the plastic studs and took a pair of slip joint pliars and rocked them back and forth over the stud to press the washers down tight. In other words, once you press them down over the shaft, they will NOT back off. I just went down to the local hardware store and got these washers/retainers that have angled "finger" designed to dig into a shaft and only go one way. I did not have a way to melt the studs the way the factory did. Here's where you can get creative or just do what I did. At this point, the structural part of the handle will just pull right off.Ĩ. Try not to cut the wood panel, just shave the head down until the melted part is all gone and then you should see only the tip of the shaft. Just look where it's attached on the other side and it will be easy to identify which ones need to be cut off. Two on top right next to the bolt and two on bottom recessed into a little hole. Use a cutoff wheel on a dremel to cut the melted plastic heads off of the studs that stick through from the pull strap. They only fit the plug they came off so no need to label.ħ. None of them require anything other than being pulle straight off their connectors. You do this by just sticking your fingers under the cable end of the white plastic bracked and prying upwards. Remove the cable from the pull handle (the silver handle that opens the door). I locked the door first so the little plunger could slip out easily from the top of the door panel.ĥ. ![]() Go around the two sides and bottom, then just pull straight towards you. Stick the putty knife under and edge and use your finger to pry outward on the knife. Easiest to start at the bottom and just pull outward. Remove the outer cover from the pull strap. It's just seven metal studs stuck into some plastic gromets.Ģ. I thin soft plastic putty knife worked well. I replaced the entire pull strap (both pieces) today.
